Short answer
SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to get your company named inside the answer that ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI writes. They share the same foundations, but AEO puts much more weight on clear answers and on what other sites say about you.
The short version
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | Rank on page one | Be named in the answer |
| What the buyer sees | Ten links, they click and compare | Three to five names, often with a reason |
| What matters most | Your pages, links to them, technical health | Your pages plus what other sites say about you |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks, traffic | How often you're named for your buyers' questions |
Where they overlap
Most of the groundwork is the same. Pages need to be crawlable, fast and written in plain text. Google says there are no extra technical requirements to appear in its AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. If your SEO basics are broken, AEO won't fix them.
Where AEO is different
Answers, not keywords
An AI answer quotes or paraphrases pages that state something directly. A page that opens with "Acme is payroll software for US startups with 5 to 50 employees, from $8 per person per month" gives it something to use. A page that opens with a slogan doesn't.
Outside sources carry more weight
When an AI tool searches, it often reads comparison articles, review sites and lists, not just your homepage. Being mentioned, accurately, on the pages it reads is a big part of AEO.
You measure mentions, not rankings
There's no "position 3" in an AI answer. You track a fixed set of buyer questions and count how often you're named, compared with your competitors, month by month.
Which should a SaaS company do first?
If your site has technical SEO problems, fix those first. Everything else builds on them. If it's in decent shape, start measuring AEO now. Most of your competitors aren't measuring it yet, and the first step costs nothing: ask the questions and write down who gets named.
Questions people also ask
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Mostly, yes. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO are two names for the same idea: getting your company into AI-written answers. Some people use AEO more for direct answers and GEO for AI search engines, but the work is the same.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AI search features still rely on the web being crawlable and indexable. AEO builds on SEO; it doesn't replace it.
Can you rank #1 on Google and still be missing from AI answers?
Yes. AI answers draw on several sources, so a competitor that's widely mentioned on comparison and review sites can be named ahead of you even if your page ranks higher.
