Why Perplexity is the easiest place to start
Every Perplexity answer lists its sources. Ask your buyers' questions, look at the citations, and you have a ready-made list of the pages that shape answers in your category. No other tool shows you this as plainly.
Step 1: let it in
Perplexity uses two user agents. PerplexityBot helps pages appear and get linked in Perplexity's search results; Perplexity's documentation recommends allowing it in robots.txt. Step 2: answer one question per page
Perplexity tends to cite pages that answer the exact question asked. A page titled "Payroll for startups with under 50 employees" that answers that in its first lines is far easier to cite than a general features page.

Step 3: get onto the pages it already cites
Run 20 buyer questions and collect every cited URL. Group them: review sites, comparison blogs, community threads, directories. The ones that appear again and again are your targets. Ask to be included where it's legitimate: submit to the directory, offer the reviewer a trial, correct outdated information about you.
Step 4: keep facts current
If a cited page lists your old pricing or a discontinued plan, the answer repeats it. Keep a list of where you're mentioned and check it quarterly.
