Does your SaaS need an llms.txt file?

Dibyendu Mondal28 October 20264 min read

Short answer

It's optional and cheap, but don't expect it to move AI answers on its own. Google says llms.txt isn't required and won't affect Search rankings, and 2026 server-log data shows most llms.txt files receive no requests from AI bots. Spend your time on pages that answer buyer questions first.

What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file at the root of a website (yoursite.com/llms.txt). It gives a short summary of who you are and links to your most important pages, in a format that's easy for language models to read. It's a community proposal, not a standard that AI companies have committed to.

Do AI tools actually read it?

The 2026 evidence says: rarely.

  • Adoption grew fast, from about 4,000 sites in June 2025 to about 36,000 by May 2026, according to Originality.ai data reported by PPC Land.
  • But an analysis of server logs across 137,000 domains, reported in the same article, found 97% of llms.txt files got zero requests in May 2026, and AI retrieval bots made up about 1% of requests to them.
  • Google says llms.txt won't help or hurt your visibility in Search, and its AI features guidance says you don't need new machine-readable files.

So should you add one?

If it takes an hour, it does no harm, and it's a useful exercise: writing a one-paragraph description of who your product is for, plus your ten most important pages, is the same clarity AI answers reward everywhere else.

But don't let anyone sell you llms.txt as an AI visibility strategy. Clear pages, outside mentions and a crawlable site matter far more.

Questions people also ask

Will llms.txt get me into ChatGPT answers?

There's no evidence it does on its own. OpenAI's crawler documentation points site owners to robots.txt, not llms.txt.

Does Google use llms.txt?

Google says llms.txt isn't required for Search and won't affect rankings either way.

Is there any downside to having one?

Very little, as long as it's accurate and kept up to date. An outdated file is worse than none.
